FIBROMYALGIA – THE DISEASE OF REPRESSED EMOTIONS

Fibromyalgia is a disease that causes chronic fatigue and muscle pain and is very uncomfortable. Its origin is still unknown, but the disease progresses fast and causes very unpleasant symptoms. The main symptom is pain in the musculoskeletal system which can get quite annoying.

The disease affects people of all ages and is more frequent in women than men.

Other common symptoms of fibromyalgia are muscle pain, sleeping disorders, anxiety, depression, cognitive impairment, irritable bowel syndrome, etc.

According to experts, the most common cause of the disease is an imbalance in the neurotransmitters that produces a series of changes that cause pain. However, many experts think that the disease is caused by repressed emotions.

People who can’t control and express their emotions have an internal conflict which is the source of their pain. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine the pain stems from the liver, as this organ is connected to our emotions.

The liver is our body’s main filter and is responsible for many bodily functions, including the function of our tendons, muscles and joints. By blocking our emotions and not letting them out, a person can impair the function of the liver which will result in fibromyalgia and pain.

Due to the unknown origin of the disease, the current treatment for fibromyalgia aims to improve the quality of life of the patient with pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches.

The treatment includes medications such as antidepressants and painkillers, talking therapies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and counselling lifestyle changes, such as exercise programs and relaxation techniques.
