There are certain things we do after a meal which can significantly harm our health.

Here’s a list of the worst habits after a meal:

  1. Smoking

After having a meal, the body is focused solely on digesting. If you light up a cigarette, the nicotine from it will bind to oxygen required for digestion and make the body absorb more carcinogens faster than usual.

  1. Eating fruit

Fruits require different enzymes to be digested, so it’s best to eat them on an empty stomach for maximum absorption of nutrients. Furthermore, they contain sugar which needs quite a while to be absorbed, so it’s best to avoid eating fruit after a meal. This habit can sometimes cause indigestion, belching and heartburn.

  1. Sleeping

If you’re taking a nap after lunch, you’re more likely to experience bloating, discomfort and even sleeping disorders. The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ioannina conducted a study which showed that people who waited more time to go to bed after a meal have significantly lower risk of stroke, so you may want to avoid going to bed for a couple of hours.

  1. Taking a shower

When you take a shower, the body tries to compensate for the change in temperature by directing the blood flow to the surface of the skin. This leaves less blood for digestion which can slow down the process and cause problems.

  1. Having a cup of tea

Drinking tea after meals is common for millions of people around the world, but that doesn’t make it healthy. Tea contains tannic acid, an ingredient which binds to iron and can cause several digestive problems.
