We all know that we must consume more fruit and vegetables as they’re rich in essential nutrients. However, sometimes even these foods can be harmful to our health, especially if eaten on an empty stomach. Here are the 5 foods you should avoid eating on an empty stomach:
- Citrus fruits
Citrus fruits are very healthy, but they should be avoided if you’re having problems with your esophagus. These fruits are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, potassium, calcium and fiber, but they can irritate an inflamed esophagus and make matters worse. If you’re craving fruit in the morning, take a slice of watermelon, strawberries, apples or raspberries.
Tomatoes contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants our body requires on a daily basis, but if eaten on an empty stomach they may stimulate the production of stomach acid which will result in stomachache and other digestive problems. This is especially dangerous if you’re suffering from ulcers or acid reflux.
- Carbonated drinks
To be realistic, carbonated drinks shouldn’t be consumed at all. According to several studies, they can increase the risk of cancer, diabetes, liver damage and heart disease. They contain about 8-10 teaspoons of sugar, which is 6-8 times more than the normal levels of sugars in your blood. This can result in insulin spikes and an adrenaline surge, followed by a sugar high. Sugar is highly addictive, and has been compared to having the same effects as heroin on your health.
- Puff pastry
Yes, croissants and Danishes are tasty, but they’re full of yeast which can irritate your stomach and may cause digestive problems, which is why we suggest skipping them for breakfast.
- Coffee or tea
Millions of people can’t go through the day without a cup of coffee or tea in the morning, but drinking coffee on an empty stomach may increase the hydrochloric acids and cause constipation or vomiting. Increased acid levels may slow down protein digestion and cause bloating and discomfort in the stomach, and they have also been linked to colon cancer. Drinking tea on an empty stomach can have a similar effect, so make sure to drink these beverages after you’ve had your breakfast.
Instead of these foods, you can eat oatmeal, eggs, watermelon and blueberries for breakfast. These foods contain all the nutrients your body needs, but won’t cause any adverse side-effects.
