Pillows are one of those items that need special treatment in order to be in tip-top shape due to their constant use. Although many people don’t think so, they do absorb a big amount of sweat and dirt and are the perfect environment for the spread of mites and bacteria.
In order to protect the pillow, people put in a protective case which can also get dirty and smell unpleasant. Although the stains may be a bit difficult to clean, we’ll show you a few simple tricks which will disinfect your pillows and cushions and make them pearly white again!
Baking soda and vinegar
Mix a bit of baking soda and vinegar and soak your pillows and pillow cases in to remove all the dirt from them and disinfect them as well. Both ingredients are powerful whitening and antibacterial agents which can easily cut through dirt and sweat stains. Here’s how to prepare the mixture:
- 80 gr. of baking soda
- 125 ml. of white vinegar
Add the mixture in your washing machine before pre-washing the pillows and cases and complete a normal wash cycle. Leave them to dry in the sun afterwards and the stains should be completely gone.
Hot water and lemon juice
Everyone knows that fresh lemon juice is one of the most effective disinfectants and natural bleaching agents. Here’s how to make an effective pillow cleaning mixture that will remove all dirt from your cases and pillows:
Lemon juice (from 6 lemons)
2 liters of water
Cook the water until it reaches boiling point, then squeeze 6 lemons in and soak the cushions in the mixture. Add more water if necessary and leave the pillows and cases to soak for about 2 hours before washing them as usual.
Baking soda and tea tree essential oil
The combination of tea tree oil and baking soda is one of the best mixtures for cleaning your pillows and pillowcases. This mixture can easily remove yellowish stains and disinfect your pillows as well.
- 80 gr. of baking soda
- 10 drops of your favorite essential oil
Mix the baking soda and tea tree essential oil in a bowl, then apply the paste on your pillows and leave it to work for 45 minutes. Wipe it off with a brush afterwards and voila! Your pillows should be cleaner than ever! They will also smell great thanks to the tea tree essential oil.
This mixture has become one of the leading homemade products for restoring the normal color of pillows and pillowcases. The method also eliminates residual sweat and dirt from the pillows, leaving them completely clean and disinfected.
- A cup of detergent
- A cup of biodegradable dishwashing soap
- A cup of Borax
- A cup of hot water
Before starting, we suggest putting on gloves and a mask in order to avoid Borax intoxication. Put the ingredients one by one in the washing machine, then put the pillows in and run a normal cycle. Leave the pillows to dry in the sun afterwards and they should be whiter than ever.
Hydrogen peroxide and lemon juice

Add the ingredients in a cup of warm water and soak your pillows in for about 60 minutes. Afterwards, put them in the washing machine and leave them to dry in the sun. The yellow stains from your pillow cases should be gone and your pillows should be as good as new.
